Project Architect - Class 2 Residential

Sydney, Australia · Architecture/Engineering

Take the lead on high-profile projects that will push your design and technical skills to the next level.

You’ll work on some of Sydney’s most talked-about buildings while gaining hands-on experience from concept to construction.

With full-time office access and flexible hours, you can manage your day how it works best for you. Plus, the studio’s location puts you right in the middle of the action, with great cafes and public transport on your doorstep.

Here’s what you’ll be doing:

Design & Technical Leadership

You’ll carry responsibility from early design through to construction handover, ensuring the building is both beautifully conceived and practically deliverable. You’ll shape the design with your ideas and expertise, while also mentoring junior architects and guiding them through the process.

Project Management

You’ll develop and maintain the project program, monitor milestones and ensure deliverables meet scheduled dates. You’ll manage the budget and cost considerations, including tracking variations and value engineering where necessary without compromising design quality.

Client & Stakeholder Liaison

You’ll act as the client’s lead point during design and construction, managing expectations, handling feedback and negotiating changes. You’ll liaise with consultants, council, certifiers, neighbours and contractors.

Construction Oversight & Execution

You’ll oversee the construction phase, conducting site visits, reviewing shop drawings and inspecting key stages and finishes to ensure the built work matches the design intent and drawing detail. You’ll resolve on-site issues promptly, balancing practicality, cost, safety and design fidelity.

What you’ll need:

  • Substantial experience (5-10+ years) in Australia, with demonstrated work on Class 2 or similar multi-residential projects.

  • Strong technical and documentation skills: construction detailing, ability to read, coordinate and integrate consultant drawings.

  • Deep familiarity with NSW planning approvals, NCC, DBP Act, local council regulations.

  • Proven ability to manage clients and stakeholders, including negotiating compromises while maintaining design integrity.

  • Leadership skills: able to run project teams and deliver under tight timelines, able to mentor juniors.

  • Excellent communication (verbal / written), capable of liaising with many parties (clients, consultants, council, contractors).

  • Strong eye for design quality and detail; ability to foresee practical issues (buildability, cost, environmental performance).

About the company

The studio is multidisciplinary, working in residential, multi-residential, public buildings, workplace, interiors etc. Its work emphasises design excellence, and responsive connection to site, climate, and material honesty. They’ve won multiple awards, including state, national, and international design awards. The John Sulman Medal was awarded to them in 2013 for public architecture.
